What a difference....

 One thing I love about Facebook is "Facebook Memories."  Today's memory showed Bob shoveling a crap ton (yes that's a technical measurement) of snow while the Water Wagon truck was stuck on our road. Caption mentioned 24" of fresh snow..... wow.   Today I had the front door open all day.  It was about 58 degrees, and sunny and not much wind and an absolutely beautiful day in NoGa.    I've always lived in Alaska (brief stints someplace else don't really count) and I'm still adjusting to life down here.  It's definitely different.  When I went to Oregon in January, I just felt more free to be me.  I can't really pin it down.  Maybe that I didn't feel self-conscious going out as a scrub, in flannels and even pajama bottoms and 2 day old hair? Maybe that there were more dirty cars, Carhartts and cracked windshields?  Maybe that there was a more laid back aura that didn't seem as dependent on material goods and appearances?  I...

It's been a long time since I've been able to really enjoy fall time. Before I started teaching, I'd spend much of the end of August to mid-September camping and hunting. I absolutely love to camp in the fall. I love that the days get warm and sunny and yet when I wake up in the morning I can see my breath. That feeling of snuggling down deep into a sleeping bag knowing that once I emerge it will a race to get a fire started, some hot coffee brewing, and enough movement to warm up. This year I'm getting to see fall again. After a few days of rain, this morning is absolutely beautiful. It's cool, but sunny. The colors seem to be changing instantly, more reds and browns than greens and bright yellows. Dropping my son off at school today I could even smell fall. The crispness, and highbrush cranberries, and wet leaves. I thought about going moose hunting. I haven't shot a moose, or even been hunting, since I started teaching 15 years ago. We certainly cou...

Red or Blue?

When I was little I remember sitting in front of my grandparents' fireplace while my Gramps had a fire going.  My Grammie's whole house was blue & white, except for her pink bathroom, and the mantle had all sorts of blue & white candles, pottery, and knick knacks.  I wanted the big crock she kept by the fireplace, but she was afraid I'd use it for putting wood in (which makes me laugh) but she did send me the blue metal matchbox that hung on the wall.  Today I hung it up at my house, and seeing it by the woodstove makes me happy. I've been missing my Gram extra much lately.  She was an avid Republican woman, and a devout Catholic, so I can't help wonder who should would have voted for this election.  I can not see her voting for a Mormon, as she didn't think much of them as a religion.  And I can't see her voting for a Democrat.  Still, I think Obama would have won out over Romney.  What I can't figure out is what logic should would have...
