I'm making lots of lists lately and figured I'd keep going. Since I often get asked what my favorite books are and I can never answer, here are a few books I think are worth reading. Siddartha , by Herman Hesse. The book that changed my way of viewing the world. The Stand , by Stephen King. One of the best books ever. Archetypal good vs. evil, great writing, and interesting characters. Lonesome Dove , by Larry McMurty. Never have I experienced such real and rounded characters on the written page. The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove , by Christopher Moore. Laugh out loud funny and strange. A Prayer for Owen Meany , by John Irving. Funny but thought provoking. I think better, but very different than Cider House Rules, World According to Garp or Hotel New Hampshire . To Kill a Mockingbird , by Harper Lee. Classic coming of age. helter skelter, part 2

"The fear of burglars is not only the fear of being robbed, but also the fear of a sudden and unexpected clutch out of the darkness.” I was driving to town earlier today and remembered another Helter Skelter story from my younger days. In about 1992, my roommate and I were house sitting for her parents in downtown Fairbanks. They have a cool, older house that's built part by part and has lots of character, along with nooks and crannies. It was a great place to stay, not only because it was a fun house to stay in, but the extended family and friends of my roommate and her brothers were always in and out as well so it was really like having a home. One evening in February.... or should I say "One dark and cold Fairbanks evening?" (Which it was - but that might be overkill.) soup

I really like soup.  I like to make it, I like to smell it, and I like to eat it.  My husband says I make the best soup in the world, which makes me happy even though it's hyperbole.  I make "clean out the refrigerator soup" pretty regularly, and it usually turns out okay.   Soup is one of those things that makes me feel happy, and warm, and like I'm taking care of my family. Just saying the word soup makes me smile. One of the books I remember from childhood is about  chicken soup with rice  . In January it's so nice While slippin' on the slidin' ice To sip hot chicken soup with rice Sippin' once, sippin' twice Sippin' chicken soup with rice Today I made two kinds of soup for a meeting I had.
