Back to the basics

It's a Stephen King kind of day.  Good vs. Evil, order vs. chaos, childhood purity vs. ancient filth.  Strange that the sun is shining outside at 90 degrees and I'm reading a book that sends cold chills down my spine.

Maybe it'll be inspiration. Maybe, if SK can write a million books, I can at least get back into writing my blog.

We had two big milestones at our house today.  Ali turned 16 years old, and Hannah leaves tonight for Georgia; she's moving.  It's been kind of a blue sort of day.  I keep picturing Ali when I first met her, 8 months old, not yet walking or talking, super blonde and curly hair.  And Hannah, when did she get grown up enough to head out on her own?  Even if she is going to stay with family, she's still out where she's going to be (hopefully) creating her own young adult life.  Across the country from us. I'm making lots of lists lately and figured I'd keep going. Since I often get asked what my favorite books are and I can never answer, here are a few books I think are worth reading. Siddartha , by Herman Hesse. The book that changed my way of viewing the world. The Stand , by Stephen King. One of the best books ever. Archetypal good vs. evil, great writing, and interesting characters. Lonesome Dove , by Larry McMurty. Never have I experienced such real and rounded characters on the written page. The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove , by Christopher Moore. Laugh out loud funny and strange. A Prayer for Owen Meany , by John Irving. Funny but thought provoking. I think better, but very different than Cider House Rules, World According to Garp or Hotel New Hampshire . To Kill a Mockingbird , by Harper Lee. Classic coming of age. The Prince of Tides , by Pat Conroy. I think he'll be recognized as one of the great writers of the age. This one has sentences that are abso...

So apparently the second grade class my son is in has a large contingency of Barney haters.  That's right, I said Barney.  As in the big purple dinosaur that teachers children how to be friendly and kind to one another.  I don't know why Barney has become the target of their twisted 8 year old minds, but apparently he has.  I know this because each day my son comes home and sings another variation of an "I hate Barney" song.  Today's song is sung to the tune of the sweet holiday carol, "Joy to the World:" Joy to the World, Barney is dead! We bar-becued his head! What happened to the bo-dy? We flushed it down the po-tty, Around around it goes, Around around it goes, A-ro-und, a-ro-und around it goes! Yes, the song is disturbing.  Yes, I'm concerned about my son's sense of humor, even though he assures me that "everyone is doing it."  And I guess the peer pressure to sing anti-Barney songs isn't as unhealthy as peer pressure...
